Why Boquete and Coronado Win Over So Many Retirees: Two Very Different Reasons

Panama's two most popular expat retirement destinations couldn't be more different — yet both win converts for compelling reasons. We've spent time in both.

Ask a group of Panama expats where they live and you will quickly discover two camps: the mountain people and the beach people. Boquete and Coronado are the flagship communities for each — and they attract retirees for almost entirely opposite reasons. Boquete sits at 1,200 metres above sea level in the Chiriquí highlands, four hours west of Panama City. The town is small, green, and permanently cool — average temperatures hover around 18–22°C year-round. There is no air conditioning in most homes because there is no need for it. The surrounding countryside produces some of the world's finest coffee, and the hiking trails into the cloud forest are extraordinary. The expat community in Boquete is well-established and welcoming. You will find English-language yoga classes, a thriving Tuesday market, and more North American and European retirees per square kilometre than almost anywhere else in Latin America. It is quiet, orderly, and genuinely beautiful. Coronado is a different proposition entirely. It sits on the Pacific Coast, 90 minutes southwest of Panama City — a beach town with a serious expat infrastructure. There is a supermarket, several good restaurants, a golf course, and a long Pacific beach that catches proper swells. The vibe is more active and social than Boquete. Coronado attracts retirees who want beach life without giving up convenience. You are close enough to Panama City for hospital visits and airport runs, but far enough to feel like you have genuinely left the city behind. Both communities are worth visiting before you commit to any one part of Panama. Most people who love Boquete know within 24 hours. The same is true of Coronado. They are that distinctive.
